Self-Care & Service: How You Can Travel with Purpose

Listen, here at Travel Divas, we’re all about travel as a form of escape, even recharging and relaxation. But there’s nothing like traveling intentionally with a goal of refueling your own cup while serving others.

Purpose-driven travel can be a rewarding way to share your gifts and services with communities in far-flung countries that hold space for you to let go and just be.

Divas like Roxie never miss a chance to practice purposeful travel because they love that sense of giving back and purpose while doing something they’re already passionate about – traveling!

Here are a few ways you can lean into the concept of purposeful travel and elevate your self-care in the process:

Minimize Your Ecological Impact

While tourism is wonderful for those of us who are tourists, it can have an unwelcome impact on the communities you visit.

Take a look at Hawaii for example. A constant stream of visitors has adversely impacted the state’s natural beauty and biodiversity. Traveling purposefully can help ensure your footprint on a destination’s climate and culture isn’t one that causes negative effects.

The same way gentrification affects so many of our neighborhoods – tourism can do the same. Traveling purposefully helps keep the culture and what makes that destination so magical intact.

Support the Local Economy

When it comes to trip accommodations – you can certainly choose big chain hotels, but staying at locally owned spots helps pour resources back into the community.

The same goes for where you eat – dining at local restaurants keeps those businesses alive.

When buying gifts for your friends and family, visit local shops and buy directly from artisans and co-ops whenever possible.

If you love to volunteer, go that route! Take a day during a solo trip and volunteer doing something you love. It could be teaching English, art, building a school, or helping out locally.

There are endless options to indulge in travel that benefits both you and your destination.

Check out this blog post for other ways travel can serve as self-care.

Canola Fields and Boulder’s Beach

Canola Fields

Boulder’s Beach

SOUTH AFRICA IS CALLING YOUR NAME, DIVA!

Our Essential Packing List for an Ultra-Luxe Safari

Look, there’s nothing more beautiful and awe-inspiring than a safari. Watching majestic animals in all their natural splendor, roaming African grasslands under fiery red-orange skies – few sights are more spectacular …

Except for you and your Travel Divas crew!

See, at Travel Divas, we don’t do safaris the way everyone else does. And we know you’re anything but average. Sure, everyone else may go in a tee and sneakers, but you’re not just anyone – you’re a Diva!

That’s why we’re giving you the tea on what you need to pack so your safari trip is drama-free and more importantly, swirling in luxury and style!

Here’s what you should bring:

Clothing – Colors, Types, Materials

Pops of color are perfect for Caribbean getaways, but for safaris, the aesthetic is definitely giving more neutral. There’s a psychological reason behind this: with all the breathtaking wildlife you’ll encounter, you’re more likely to attract attention with bright colors like reds and neons. You’ll get the safest and most observer-like experience sticking to khakis, light browns, greens, and tans so you blend more easily into the environment.

Make sure you pack casual clothes, too – capris, shorts, safari or drawstrings pants, high-waisted leggings, athletic joggers, or loose tees. You’ll be in a hot environment, so make sure your clothes are breathable and not too tight.

Cotton is your best bet, but if you can find other breathable materials, that’s okay too. Anything that’s waterproof on the outside will be helpful too.

Accessories

Bring layers including a light jacket and a scarf, as temps tend to drop once the sun sets at night. These can also make it less likely for bug bites along your ride.

We love a good wide-brim, beige hat and a straw bag that’s lightweight so you can pack sunscreen, lip gloss, your designer shades, and water.

Just because you’re out and about doesn’t mean you shouldn’t put on your jewels, though. Grab yourself a sexy gold bangle and some small round gold hoops.

Make sure you’re rocking comfortable undergarments too – if they’re moisture-wicking, even better.

Bug spray is definitely a must. Don’t forget a small first aid kit and any anti-nausea, motion-sickness, or allergy tablets, along with any medication your doctors prescribed such as malaria tablets.

Wet wipes, a portable charger, a flashlight, and binoculars are great to bring as well.

Last But Not Least

What Not to Bring

Leave the camouflage at home. Depending on what country you’re in, it’s prohibited (such as Zimbabwe). Drones are a no-go in East Africa and leave plastic bags at the hotel if you’re in Kenya or Rwanda.

Last But Not Least

Don’t forget to pack your Black girl magic and an open mind! And if you’re curious as to what kind of safari adventures await you, check out our Africa trips.

Our time there includes a Cape Town City Experience Tour, a trip to stunning Boulders Beach and the acclaimed Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens.

The Natural Wonders of Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe is one of the most gorgeous countries in the world and we’re setting out to see as much of it as possible!

The crowning glory here is always Victoria Falls – no matter how many pictures you see of the majestic waterfall, nothing compares to the in-person experience. You’ll feel its thunderous beauty as we embark on a guided walking safari through the rainforest along the edge of the falls.

Safari in Botswana

There’s plenty to experience in Botswana, but the safari is out of this world. We’ll be on boats and in open vehicles to take in all the natural wonders this area has to offer in Botswana Chobe National Park, home to Africa’s largest concentration of elephants and many other native species.

And the unforgettable experiences don’t stop there. We’ll be taking a sunset cruise down the Zambezi River, which is home to crocodiles, hippos and countless wildlife.

Luxury Experiences

If you think our adventures outdoors are incredible, wait until you discover all the little luxuries we’re serving up on this trip. We’ll be staying at The Table Bay Hotel and Victoria Falls Safari Club where you can unwind and relax in best-of-class accommodations.
