3 Essential Safety Tips for Black Female Solo Travelers on Group Trips

If there’s one thing Roxie doesn’t play about, it’s safety when traveling by yourself – especially when you’re in a group of people you haven’t gotten to know yet.

No matter if you choose to travel with fellow Divas or go off on your own in a group excursion, it’s important to always ensure your safety is top of mind. Once that’s in place, that’s where the fun can come in.

Here are a few things to consider to ensure you’re safe and sound when in travel groups:

Stay Aware

For most Black women, we move through life always keeping an eye out. When you’re traveling by yourself among a group of strangers, that old adage is never more true. While your fun and pleasure are priorities, it’s important to remember to pay attention to your surroundings.

Be mindful of what area you’re in, as it might determine how you need to dress and what accessories you can get away with wearing. If you’re in an area that isn’t as affluent, it might not be a good idea to wear your diamonds and flashy name-brand clothes or bags.

The best way to think about it is to keep your senses open – ensure you can clearly see, hear and feel where you are. That means no headphones when you’re in an unfamiliar place!

Keep Your Valuables Secure

While you may be the G.O.A.T. at securing the bag or great deals when you travel, that isn’t the only thing to keep secure when traveling. Your belongings and valuables that you worked so hard for the need to have a close eye kept on them.

So, how do you do that? First off, be mindful of what you carry or what’s visible, such as your phone, headphones, and wallet. Always pay attention to where you are before pulling out these items.

If you’re sharing a room with someone you don’t know, be sure not to disclose or make obvious the location of your valuables such as your passport, wallet, or money. The same goes for ensuring no one sees your phone or device passcodes.

Be sure to password-protect and keep backups of important documents outside of your electronics just in case.

This goes for conversation too – aim to be discreet about your habits, as they can give others clues about your valuables or personal information.

Trust Your Instincts

Just like Olivia Pope used to say on Scandal, your gut often knows what’s up. Your intuition is a real thing that can help keep you safe. If you’ve “got a feeling” that you can’t shake, your instincts will likely kick in to remind you to be careful. While it can be easy to ignore this – don’t. You’re a Black woman in a foreign country – and you’ve likely got a keen sense and “uh oh” radar that’s served you well in the past.

When it comes to safety, lean into your Black girl magic intuition, err on the side of caution, and remove “benefit of the doubt” from your vocabulary. But also, don’t forget to keep an open mind. Sometimes cultural differences can trigger us to feel unsafe. That’s why it’s important to do your research about cultural norms beforehand.

Speaking of which – if you’re wondering how to navigate those cultural differences, check out this blog post I wrote for you.

The Diva’s Guide to Hassle-Free Transportation Abroad

Roxie here, and just like DJ Khaled, I’m back again with another smash hit full of travel tips for Divas just like you!

Traveling is such an eye-opening, healing experience, but there are so many unknowns that can make it a bit scary. One of those? Transportation abroad! Whether you’re used to high-tech public transit back home or you’re used to driving yourself everywhere, transportation abroad simply looks different depending on what country you’re in.

So, how does a Diva safely travel inside her bucket-list destination? Just do these 4 things so you can stay ready and feel confident you know how to get around.

Research Public Transportation Options

Like “most” things in life, you can usually find the answers to what you’re looking for online. Before booking your trip, do your due diligence about the availability of public transportation at your destination.

Depending on the country or continent, it can look vastly different. Tokyo public transportation is extremely sophisticated, organized, and on-time but the language difference can make it difficult to figure out where you’re going, whereas if you’re in Turks and Caicos, the only way for you to really get around is with a private driver.

Before you pick your destination, ask yourself what you’re comfortable with. Do you want to have access to trains and buses? Are taxis readily available and if so, are they regulated or unregulated? How do you rent a car? Scavenge the internet (don’t rely on just one source) to find out what every day and even long-distance travel looks like.

Renting a Car

Are you a Diva with her driver’s license? You might think the best way to get around on your own time in a foreign country is by renting a car. Depending on where you are, there may be certain requirements in place to rent a car. In addition, be sure to review traffic laws, what side of the street to drive on, and what kind of streets are in the areas you want to visit.

For example, renting a car in Florence might seem like a wonderfully scenic way to explore the Tuscan countryside, but if you’re going through the more famed part of the city, the streets are narrow and lined with cobblestone.

Hire a Private Driver

When I go on vacay helping Travel Divas scout some of the best spots to bring to you, one of my favorite ways to travel is by vetting and hiring a private driver. If you’re the type of Diva who’s used to doing it all by yourself, let your vacation be the time you DON’T do that. Look for recommendations for reputable private car services that can safely get you to your location.

This is especially important if you’re traveling late at night or in areas that are less frequented.

Another safety tip: never let anyone know you’re traveling by yourself, it’s your first time in the country or let them know where you’re staying. It may sound simple but safety is important when traveling to foreign countries!

How to Calm Your Anxious Mind before Traveling

You’ve got your tickets. Your bags are packed. You’re set to head out on the trip of a lifetime. And the only thing you can feel is … ANXIETY.

If that sounds familiar, you aren’t alone. Traveling can be incredibly stressful, no matter how much you’re looking forward to your trip. But the good news is, there are plenty of things you can do to ease your mind!

Flip the script on travel anxiety with these calming strategies to feel more relaxed before your next trip.

Tip #1: Give Yourself Time

Part of the reason so many people feel anxious during travel is the pressure to be in specific places at specific times. You start to worry about long lines, traffic jams, getting lost, forgetting something important and then panic sets in.

Giving yourself some extra time to get to your destination can relieve a lot of this stress and help you manage your anxiety. After all, it’s incredibly unlikely you’ll end up in a 2-hour traffic jam, an extra-long security line AND get lost in the airport! Knowing you won’t be running to board your plane at the last minute will make the entire journey more enjoyable.

Tip #2: Stay Positive

If you begin your journey with a negative mindset, you’re inviting stress and anxiety on your trip. Try to stay positive about your vacation from the moment you book it. Instead of asking yourself what might go wrong, focus on all the fun you’ll have doing new things in beautiful places.

Tip #3: Be Prepared

Worried that something is going to go wrong while you’re away? Set aside some time to journal these thoughts and what you can do to prevent them from impacting your trip. For example, you might check that you have all important phone numbers saved in your phone or designate a meeting place in advance in case you’re separated from your group. While you should never dwell on worst-case scenarios, putting a little prep work in can calm your fears.

Tip #4: Practice Calming Techniques

If you deal with travel anxiety, then you know it can hit you at any time. Before your next trip, spend some time exploring breathing exercises, guided meditations and other calming techniques. The key here is to find something that works for you before you’re in the middle of traveling. That way, when anxiety strikes, you’ll be able to practice the technique in the moment.

The Travel Divas Guide to Traveling Safely During COVID-19

It’s been a stressful year. And before any of this happened, you were already on the verge of needing a vacation. After all, you’re a boss chick who’s about her business.

And with COVID-19, that business just got busier.

You’re feeling burnt out and ready to escape the world and take a break from the business, your career and constant news coverage about what’s going on in the world.

The only problem is, we’re still in the middle of a pandemic.

And while you KNOW there’s no way you can settle for yet another staycation, you’re still a little unsure if it’s a good time to fly or even what travel etiquette looks like with a contagious virus everywhere.

That’s why we put together a protocol guide to keep you safe, so you can stay healthy and lower the chances of you or someone else getting sick:

A happy female business traveler video chats as she waits for ride share to the airport. She is wearing a protective face mask as she travels during COVID-19.

Protocol #1: Check Yourself

Before you arrive to the airport or your destination, assess your health. How do you feel? Is your temperature normal? Do you have a fever? A cough? Is your sense of smell normal?

Don’t forget to monitor yourself prior to leaving to determine what normal feels like for you.

Protocol #2: Mask

Wearing a mask is the easiest way to prevent the spread of the virus. Wear it everywhere, even on the airplane, and change your mask every few hours.

Dispose of single-use ones and wash reusable masks every night.

Protocol #3: Sanitize

Use the hand sanitizer stations everywhere you go while on vacation. Remember to sanitize after touching frequent touch points such as elevator buttons, door handles, escalator rails, TV remotes and more.

Don’t forget to sanitize your hotel room: TV remotes, doorknobs and more.

Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water, then rinse for 10 seconds.

Try to keep your hands off your face as well.

Bring personal bottles of hand sanitizer with you, as you may not have access to soap and water everywhere.

Protocol #4: Social Distance

Maintain at least 6 feet apart from people (other than your travel buddies) when possible. Follow any lines on the floor that indicate this.

Protocol #5: Get Checked Out

If you’re not feeling well, get checked out. Many hotels/resorts have professionals onsite or can direct you to medical help.
